Biography

Iain Dowie was appointed Football Management Consultant at Hull City in mid-March 2010, two days after Phil Brown had been placed on gardening leave by the club – the odd job title was constructed as a means of demonstrating that Brown’s role as first team manager was not yet terminated, though he never returned to the job. Dowie was handed the mountainous task of guiding the Tigers away from the Premier League relegation zone, a job that seemed vaguely achievable after two matches in charge – an unfortunate last-gasp defeat at Portsmouth, having twice taken the lead, and a good 2-0 win over Fulham. But that proved to be the tiny pinnacle of Dowie’s time at Hull City, four defeats in the next five matches consigned the Tigers to relegation and the final two matches of the season ended in draws – an entertaining 2-2 draw at Wigan featuring goals for City youngsters Will Atkinson and Mark Cullen, and a dreary 0-0 draw against a Liverpool reserves side. Iain Dowie’s style may not always have been the easiest on the eye, but the former Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace striker is almost definitely cleverer than you realised.

Dowie made over 300 league appearances as a battling, uncompromising targetman throughout the 1990s, becoming renowned for his dogged spirit rather than his classy style.

But he was first noticed thanks to his goalscoring exploits in non-league, bagging 47 goals in 87 games for Hendon.

The forward’s record caught the eye of plenty of scouts, but he rejected moves to clubs including Chelsea and Sheffield United due to his somewhat unconventional job.

Iain Dowie (born 9 January 1965) is a football manager, former professional footballer and sports television pundit.

He played as a striker from 1983 until 2001, notably in the Premier League for Southampton, Crystal Palace and West Ham United. He earned 59 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring 12 goals. He also played in the Football League for Luton Town, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, and in Non-league for Cheshunt, St Albans City and Hendon.

After retiring from playing he went on to manage Oldham Athletic, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Queens Park Rangers before joining Hull City in a football management consultant. He has since worked as a pundit largely for Sky Sports.
