Clay Helton Biography
Clay Helton is the head football coach at Georgia Southern. Helton took over the program in 2021. He previously served as the head coach at USC, beginning on an interim basis in 2015 when he went 5-4. He followed that up by guiding the Trojans to back-to-back double-digit win seasons and major bowl appearances. Helton had been on the coaching staff at USC since 2010. He also previously served as interim head coach in 2013 and led the Trojans to a win at the Las Vegas Bowl.
Prior to arriving in Los Angeles, Helton spent a decade on the Memphis coaching staff. From 1997-99, he was running backs coach for his father Kim at the University of Houston. Helton's coaching career started with a season as a graduate assistant and a year as running backs coach at Duke. During his playing career, he split time as a backup quarterback at Auburn and Houston.

Childhood: Helton’s father, Kim, was a college and NFL assistant and Clay grew up around coaches such as Doug Dickey at Florida, Howard Schnellenberger at Miami. As a boy, he played catch with Miami quarterbacks Jim Kelly and Bernie Kosar and Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon.
High school: Helton was a baseball player until he arrived at Clements High in Sugar Land, Texas. He played quarterback and was the varsity starter his senior season. “I was lot better on the chalkboard than I was on the field,” he told The Times in 2013.
College: Helton played two seasons at Auburn under coach Pat Dye, then transferred to Houston after his father was hired to coach the Cougars before the 1993 season. He was a backup quarterback for two seasons. He earned a degree in mathematics and interdisciplinary science.

His father, Kim Helton, was a coach in college, the National Football League, and the Canadian Football League; his brother, Tyson, is the head coach at Western Kentucky.
Early life
Helton was born on June 24, 1972, in Gainesville, Florida, where his father Kim Helton was a graduate assistant for the Florida Gators football team.[1][2] The Helton family later lived in the Miami, Tampa Bay, and Houston areas, as Kim Helton later coached for the University of Miami, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Houston Oilers.[2] Clay Helton attended Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas and graduated in 1990.[3]
