Tony McNulty

Anthony James McNulty (born 3 November 1958), known as Tony McNulty, is a Labour politician and MP. He was Home Office Minister of State for Security, Counter-Terrorism, Crime and Policing from 2005-2008. He resigned from the government on 5 June 2009 after he was implicated in an expenses scandal.[1]

Ten second biography

Straight-talking McNulty's first ministerial post was overseeing neighbourhood renewal, housing and planning as a junior minister at the now-defunct Office for the Deputy Prime Minister. After a spell at the Department of Transport, he was moved to the Home Office in 2005 and put in charge of policing in 2006.

Educated at Salvatorian College, a Roman Catholic grant-maintained school for boys in Harrow, London. Studied political theory at the University of Liverpool before becoming a lecturer at the University of North London. Elected as MP for Harrow East in 1997.

Where does he sit politically?

McNulty is thought to be one of the brightest Blairite loyalists to be swept into power in 1997. He is unlikely to rebel against the Government and has voted in favour of Trident, ID cards, foundation hospitals and 42-day detention.

Anthony James McNulty (born 3 November 1958) is a retired British politician who was the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Harrow East from 1997 to 2010. During his ministerial career, which began in 2003, he was Minister for London and later Minister of State for Employment and Welfare Reform at the Department for Work and Pensions. He resigned his position on 5 June 2009 after allegations in the press regarding his expenses.

Background, education and early political career

His father migrated to England from County Donegal, Ireland.[1]

McNulty was educated at the Salvatorian College, Wealdstone and at Stanmore Sixth Form College. He graduated from the University of Liverpool with a BA in Political Theory and Institutions and an MA in Political Science from Virginia Tech in the United States.[2] Before becoming an MP, he was leader of the Labour group on Harrow council and a senior lecturer in Organisational Behaviou
