Amy, My Daughter

Well, this one is tough to review. I had high hopes for this memoir by Mitch Winehouse, and I was looking forward to writing a more positive review. I appreciate the heartfelt message that Winehouse was trying to convey in writing this book. It’s very clear that he loved his daughter and would stop at nothing to help her get sober (off alcohol) and stay clean (off drugs). However, the book was so exhaustingly written that I wanted it to end at the half-way point.

Without meaning to, Mitch painted a picture of a very selfish and spoiled daughter, even as an addict. I was upset that Amy put her family and friends through so much hell. She was very unfair to her older brother Alex who was deprived of his own father’s attention throughout those years. She was selfish with her father’s time, energy, and money. I feel so bad for Mitch: his quality of life admittedly went down during her sick years, and he didn’t have time to nurture his own emotional and mental health. The rest of her family and frien

All About Amy Winehouse's Parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse

Amy Winehouse made her mark on the world with her remarkable talent and giving spirit, and her parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, are continuing her legacy years after her death.

Mitch, a cab driver and singer, and Janis, a pharmacist, knew their daughter was special from a young age — and now remember their daughter for her triumphs and not her struggles.

“We always wanted the world to know the real Amy, where she came from and what made her tick,” Mitch told PEOPLE in 2023. “She was a loyal, generous friend. She’d help anybody ... Just a wonderful human being who saw the best in everybody.”

Amy's dad and mom were involved in the late singer’s life and supported her through ups and downs as she publicly dealt with alcohol and drug addictions, as well as an eating disorder. Their devotion to their daughter and her image has stayed intact since she died at the age of 27 on July 23, 2011, from "alcohol toxicity."

Amy Winehouse - Biography

Amy Winehouse early life

Amy Jade Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, in the London suburb of Southgate to Jewish parents Mitchell, a taxi driver, and Janis, a pharmacist.

The couple parted ways when Amy was nine and her elder brother Alex was 13. As a child she was "always very self willed,'' says Mitch, ''not badly behaved... but different".

Aged just ten she set up a short-lived rap duo called Sweet 'n Sour, modelled on Salt 'n' Pepa, with best friend Juliette Ashby. Amy was the sour element.

Education

At 12, she enrolled at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but three years later was asked to leave for having her nose pierced and failing to keep up with her studies. During her time there, she later recalled, she was often given solos that required a sexy, husky jazz-style voice.

Up to that point her family hadn't been aware of the extent of her vocal abilities. ''I went to see her in a recital and I thought she'd just be acting,'' remembers Mitch. ''But th
