Some time after Sweetheartswas published in 1994, I did a joint book signing with Judy Lewis, the illegitimate daughter of Loretta Young and Clark Gable, at the Beverly Hills Woman’s Club. Her story was poignantly told in her autobiography, Uncommon Knowledge. In a nutshell, this is Judy’s story as noted in Publisher’s Weekly, ©1994:

Loretta Young (born Gretchen Michaela Young; January 6, 1913 – August 12, 2000) was an American actress. Starting as a child, she had a long and varied career in film from 1917 to 1989. She received numerous honors including an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and three Primetime Emmy Awards as well as two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her work in film and television.

She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film The Farmer's Daughter (1947), and received her second Academy Award nomination for her role in Come to the Stable (1949). She also starred in films such as Born to Be Bad (1934), Call of the Wild (1935), The Crusades (1935), Eternally Yours (1939), The Stranger (1946), The Bishop's Wife (1947), and Key to the City (1950).

The story of Clark Gable and Loretta Young’s brief romance on the set of Call of the Wild and subsequent pregnancy is a sad one. Nowadays it is nothing at all, merely the typical day’s news, to read that an unwed celebrity is pregnant. Nobody bats an eye. In 1935, it was exactly the opposite. Clark was married, albeit in name only, to Ria at the time. So not only was unwed Loretta pregnant, she was pregnant with a married man’s baby.

I probably get more emails and comments on the site, Facebook and Instagram about this Loretta Young situation than any other Gable topic. “He abandoned his child with Loretta” “He would never acknowledge his own child” “He turned his back on Loretta” Frankly it’s so tiring that I don’t often post pictures from Call of the Wild or Key to the City. I even delayed having these two films being Movie of the Week until now, because I knew featuring them meant the whole week would revolve around Loretta’s pregnancy and Clark’s “abandonment” of his child.
