Chairman of Dubai-based Afras Ventures and former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Dr. Shashi Tharoor was the official candidate of India for the succession to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2006, and came a close second out of seven contenders in the race. An author, politician and former international diplomat, Dr. Shashi Tharoor straddles several worlds of experience. At present a fourth-term Member of Parliament, he represents the parliamentary constituency of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in the Lok Sabha. A proud member of the Indian National Congress (INC), he has served as a Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State for Human Resource Development in the Government of India during the second term of the United Progressive Alliance. At present the chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, he has previously chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committees on External Affairs (2014-19), Information Technology (2019-21) and Chemicals & Fertilizers (2021-24).

Shashi Tharoor (Malayalam pronunciation:[ʃɐʃit̪ɐɾuːr]; born 9 March 1956) is an Indian politician, writer, and former diplomat, who has been serving as Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, since 2009. He is currently the Chairman of Committee on External Affairs. He was formerly an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and unsuccessfully ran for the post of Secretary-General in 2006. Founder-Chairman of All India Professionals Congress,[1] he formerly served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs and on Informational Technology.
