Wayne Howard Joseph Fontes (; born February 17, 1940) is a former American football coach and college and professional football player who was the head coach of the National Football League (NFL)'s Detroit Lions from 1988 to 1996. He is the longest tenured head coach in team history. His 67 wins and 71 losses are each the most for a head coach in team history.

Background and early career

Fontes was born in the fishing community of New Bedford, Massachusetts. According to the 1930 US Census, his mother, Matilda Fontes, was born in Wareham, Massachusetts. His father, Caetano Fontes, was Portuguese, born in Cape Verde, a Portuguese colony at the time.[1] Fontes grew up in Canton, Ohio where he played football, basketball, and baseball at McKinley High School. He attended Michigan State University where he was an All-Big Ten defensive back. He graduated from MSU in 1962.

Career Summary

Wayne Fontes was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1976 to 1996, finishing his career as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Over his twenty-one years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 128-195-1. He was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 1989 until the 1996 season, during which time the Lions went 64-64-0. During his career he was a head coach for eight seasons. He was fired from the Lions on Friday, December 27, 1996.

Career Awards

Fontes won the NFL's Coach of the Year award in 1991 after guiding the Lions to a 12-4-0 record and a a berth in the playoffs. During the 1989 and 1994 seasons as the head coach of the Detroit Lions he coached Barry Sanders to the AP Offensive Player of the Year and AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.
