Małcużyński, Witold (EN)

Małcużyński Witold, *10 August 1914 Warsaw, †17 July 1977 Palma (Mallorca), Polish pianist. He studied piano at the conservatory in Warsaw with J. Lefeld (1929–32) and J. Turczyński (1932–36), and law and philosophy at the University of Warsaw (1932–34). In 1936, he took 5th place at the international piano competition in Vienna, and in 1937, he won the 3rd prize at the 3rd International F. Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, for which he prepared the program in 1936–37 under the direction of I.J. Paderewski in Morges, Switzerland. He then studied with M. Long and I. Philippe in Paris. The outbreak of World War II found him there. In the fall of 1939, he married the French pianist C. Gaveau, whom he met during the Chopin competition, and then he made his debut in Paris at Pasdeloup’s symphony concerts, causing enthusiasm with his performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto in F minor. Witold Malcuzynski, pianist

Dear devoted music-loving friends of CMG:

On Saturday, 10 August 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time, I offer tributes to the Polish-born pianist WITOLD MALCUZYNSKI, in Poland on 24 August 1914 and died in Spain at age 62 on 17 July 1977. Originally planning work in the field of jurisprudence, it was music and the piano that grabbed his heart, that from the age of five. At nine, he began piano lessons and eventually entered the Warsaw Conservatory, maker of great musicians of all kinds. Among his teachers was Jozef Turczynski in Poland, and Marguerite Long and Isidor Phillip in France. He came in third place at the Third International Piano Competition in Warsaw, the same year he met his future wife, pianist Colette Gaveau. Third placement didn't seem to deter his career in any manner.
