The Children of George and Harriett Pullman

George and Harriett Pullman were married on June 13th 1867 and their first child was born a year and almost two months later. Florence was to be the first of four children.

Florence Sanger Pullman, born on August 11, 1868. Florence was her father’s favorite child, even naming the hotel in the Pullman town after her.

Harriet Sanger Pullman was born a year after Florence on September 17, 1869.

The long-awaited sons, twins, arrived on June 25, 1875. George Mortimer Pullman, Jr, known as “Georgie” and Walter Sanger Pullman, known as “Sanger”.

Each having unique personalities and lived incredibly opulent lives. In this blog series I will attempt to detail each of their personalities and lives lived through the Pullman letters and diaries.

Harriett Pullman (1869-1956)

She was born in Chicago and grew up principally at the Pullman Mansion. She was the prettier daughter of the founder of the Pullman Sleeping Palace Car Company and growing up her father gave her a $100 every time she named one of his 2,000 rail cars. When she married into San Francisco society at the age of twenty one in 1892, she was given a $500,000 trust fund which was topped up by an additional $1 million when her father died in 1897. She is remembered as the builder of Carolands, a 98-room French chateau in California that for many years was the largest private house west of the Mississippi. Sadly, the project depleted her funds, and her husband. They separated just two years after its completion and she left California for New York. In 1925, she married into the old Knickerbocker aristocracy when she wed Colonel Arthur F. Schermerhorn. They lived between 111 East 48th and Spring Lawn in Lenox, Massachusetts, but despite leaving what the Colonel supposed to be over a million dollars to his wife, when he died in 1934 he was found to be ins

Pullman moved his family from Albion, New York to Chicago in 1865. He married Harriett Sanger, daughter of a construction company owner, on June 13, 1867. Together, they had four children: Florence (1868-1937), Harriett (1869-1956), and the twins George, Jr. (1875-1901) and Walter Sanger [known as Sanger] (1875-1905). A young man named Gustave Behring claimed that he was the illegitimate son of Pullman. Florence was his acknowledged favorite, accompanying him on many business trips. Harriett lived the longest, until 87, and had several marriages. The twins were a source of great scandal and heartache, described partially below.

Florence was Pullman's favorite child, and, in fact, she seemed to be his favorite relative. She often accompanied him on business trips and served as an advisor to him.
