Stanley Robert Vinton Jr. was born on April 16, 1941 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. His father and mother were Stanley Vinton and Dorothy Studinsky. His father was a local band leader; it is not hard to see how Stanley Robert Vinton Jr. became interested in music at a very young age. At only five years of age Vinton Jr. was already singing in his father's band and by ten he was playing the clarinet with the band. By the time Vinton was 16 years old in high school, he was playing the trumpet as well and eventually formed his own band.
After starting his band, he decided to change his name to Bobby Vinton and felt he needed to make a difference between him and his father. Vinton focused on band leading and would play in school dances and other similar events around the area. Once at Duquesne University, Vinton decided to study and graduate in musical composition. By the time Vinton graduated from college he knew how to play all instruments in the band.

Equipped with an angelic voice and singing sincere songs about undying love, Bobby Vinton had a string of hits when he burst onto the pop scene in 1962 with “Roses Are Red.” He generated 30 Top 40 songs in the 1960s and 1970s, and 24 of his albums made the Billboard Top 200. Vinton’s romantic love songs had particular appeal to young fans, but later in his career he was able to adjust his style to appeal to adult audiences. He had remarkable staying power for a teen idol, continuing to record songs that registered on the charts for well over a decade.
Growing up in the same home town that produced Perry Como, Vinton showed an early musical interest in the Big Band sound that sprang from his father’s work as a bandleader in the Pittsburgh area. Born Stanley Robert Vinton in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania suburb of Canonsburg, after a brief spell in the US Army, in 1962 Vinton recorded his first single titled Roses are Red (My Love). It went to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Arguably his most famous song is 1963's Blue Velvet that also went to No.1. In 1964, Vinton had two No.1 hits, There! I've Said It Again and Mr. Lonely, the latter now being the basis for Akon's hit "Lonely".
In the 1970s he had a few more hits such as My Melody of Love which was partially sung in Polish and the cover of Brian Hyland's Sealed With A Kiss.
In the course of his career, Vinton has sold over 75 million records, and is still performing, on tour and at the Bobby Vinton Blue Velvet Theatre in Branson, Missouri.
In recognition of his recording career, Bobby Vinton has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6916 Hollywood Blvd.
