Profile: Thailand's King Vajiralongkorn
In 1977 he married his cousin Princess Soamsawali and they had their first child, Princess Bajarakitiyabha, in December 1978. However, by then he was involved with a young actress, Yuvadhida, with whom he had five children from 1979 to 1987. He married her in 1994, but in 1996 very publicly denounced her and disowned his four sons, who were studying in the UK.
He married his third wife Srirasmi, a lady-in-waiting, in 2001, and had another son, Prince Dipangkorn, with her in 2005.
In 2014 Srirasmi was stripped of her royal title and nine of her relatives, including her parents, were arrested for lese majeste on charges they had abused their connections with the Crown Prince. A police officer linked to the family died in custody after falling from a window.
That charge, of abusing his name, has also been made against others who became close to the Crown Prince, notably a well known fortune teller who, together with another police officer, died after being arrested in 2015. At the same time, the Crown Prince's personal bodyguard

Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, or Phutthayotfa (1737 – 1802), posthumously titled Rama I the Great, was King of Siam (now called Thailand) from 1782 to 1809, and the founder of the Chakri dynasty which rules Thailand to this day. He did much to place Buddhism at the center of cultural and religious life, as well as repelling the Burmese threat to Thailand's independence (land of the free). In fact, he extended Thai rule throughout central Indochina. He is credited with the "reconstruction of the Thai State" and with recovering Thailand's "place and prestige in the area." [1]. Vajiralongkorn
King of Thailand since 2016
"Rama X" redirects here. For the Indian ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin, see Rama Varma X.
Vajiralongkorn[c] (born 28 July 1952) is King of Thailand since 2016. He is the tenth monarch of Thailand from the Chakri dynasty, titled Rama X.
The only son of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit, he was made crown prince by his father in 1972, at the age of 20. After his father's death on 13 October 2016, he was expected to ascend to the Thai throne but asked for time to mourn before taking the throne.[4] He accepted the throne on the night of 1 December 2016. His coronation took place from 4–6 May 2019.[5] The Thai government retroactively declared his reign to have begun on 13 October 2016, upon his father's death.[6] Aged 64 at that time, Vajiralongkorn became the oldest Thai monarch to ascend to the throne.[7] He is the wealthiest monarch in the world,[8] with a net worth estimated to be between US$30 billion[9] and US$70 billion.[10]
