Laurence Joseph Mullen Jr. (; born 31 October 1961) is an Irish musician, best known as the drummer and co-founder of the rock band U2.[1] A member of the band since its inception, he has recorded 15 studio albums with U2. Mullen's distinctive, almost military drumming style developed from his playing martial beats in childhood marching bands.
Mullen was born in Dublin, where he attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School. In 1976, he co-founded U2 after posting a message on the school's notice board in search of musicians. Mullen has worked on numerous side projects during his career. In 1990, he produced the Ireland national football team's song "Put 'Em Under Pressure" for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. In 1996, he worked with U2 bandmate Adam Clayton on a dance re-recording of the "Theme from Mission: Impossible". Lawrence Mullen was born in Artane, Dublin to Larry and Maureen on 31st October 1961 and brought up there at number 60 Rosemount Avenue. He had a tragic childhood, losing both his sister Mary (1973) and his mother (in a road traffic accident in 1978). In the mid 1970s, he began doing military style drumming, taking lessons from legendary Irish teachers, Joe Bonnie and his daughter, and becoming a member of the Artane Boys' Band (which was later to feature in the video for the 1998 re-release of 'The Sweetest Thing'). Forced to leave for refusing to cut his long hair (I know - it's hard to believe that Larry ever had long hair), he then learned to play in a more jazz style around the time that he formed U2, which meant that his initial contribution to the band was often limited to merely filling in and adding drum rolls.

Larry Mullen is an instinctive drummer who, like the rest of U2, plays what comes naturally, directly from the heart. Larry has never liked to clutter U2’s songs with busy drumming – he’s always understood the value of drama-laden space. When U2 first made it big in the 1980s Larry already had a mature style which belied his youth.
Growing up in Ireland’s capital city of Dublin, Larry started out playing piano but soon gave it up for the drums at the age of nine. From the start he wanted to play his own way and was not keen on learning paradiddles and fancy technique. Larry instigated the formation of U2 while at the Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin by posting a ‘musicians wanted’ notice. He was still only 15 and he saved up cash from mowing lawns to buy his first drum kit.
The band soon graduated from playing Rolling Stones covers to writing their own songs, inspired by the brash ethos of late-1970s punk. By 1979 the band was forging their own identity and gaining attention.
