He was born in Innsbruck and died in Berlin. Życiorys
[edytuj | edytuj kod]W latach 1940–1942 był uczniem Franza Ledwinki i Clemensa Kraussa w Mozarteum w Salzburgu[1][2]. Od 1942 do 1944 roku pełnił funkcję kapelmistrza Tiroler Landestheater w Innsbrucku[1]. W latach 1952–1957 był dyrektorem muzycznym miasta Remscheid, następnie od 1957 do 1960 roku pierwszym dyrygentem Pfalzorchester w Ludwigshafen[1][2]. W latach 1960–1964 był dyrektorem muzycznym Staatsoper i Staatskapelle w Dreźnie[1][2]. Od 1964 do 1971 i ponownie od 1975 do 1990 roku pełnił funkcję dyrektora muzycznego berlińskiejStaatsoper Unter den Linden[1]. W latach 1964–1967 dyrygował na festiwalach w Bayreuth[1]. Występował gościnnie m.in. w Stanach Zjednoczonych[1][2]. Na początku lat 90. XX wieku ze względu na ciężką chorobę wycofał się z życia publicznego[1].

Otmar Suitner (German pronunciation:[ˈɔtmaʁzuˈiːtnɐ];[1] 16 May 1922 – 8 January 2010) was an Austrian conductor who spent most of his professional career in East Germany. He was born in Innsbruck and died in Berlin. He was principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden from 1960 to 1964, and then music director at the Berlin State Opera in East Berlin from 1964 to 1990. He was concurrently chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Berlin from 1964 to 1991. (It has been common practice that the same conductor is responsible for leading both institutions.)
A fairly prolific recording artist, he was particularly notable in Austro-German music, having conducted discs of works by Max Reger and Paul Hindemith as well as the first Beethoven symphony cycle to be released on compact disc. He taught at the Mozarteum for twenty years. From 1977 to 1990 Suitner was professor of conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
